![]() Organ Fireworks IX: Christopher Herrick plays the organ of Berne Munster in Switzerland.
Listen to the Widor Toccata (a splendid French Toccata) from Symphony No 5 in F, Op 42 No 1.
Having also trained in pipe organ, some of my favourite organ music is from the French repertoire, particularly the French toccatas.
An organ toccata is usually a piece with fast repeated notes on the manuals (keyboards of the organ) and with the melody played by the pedals (played with the organist's feet).
The Widor Toccata is sometimes played on Easter Day, as the recessional for weddings and is programmed on organ concerts.
Born in Lyon to a family of organ builders, Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) showed early his proclivities toward the organ. The renowned French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, friend of the Widor family, was highly impressed by the young boy's talent and arranged for him to study organ in Brussels with Jacques Lemmens and composition with François-Joseph Fétis, director of the Brussels Conservatory.
